Surface Roughness Corrected Contact Angle – Whitepaper

In this white paper we will take an in-depth look at the principles underlying the 3D Topography Module method, resulting roughness parameters, and also the Wenzel theory used for roughness corrected contact angles. We will also highlight applications and samples that are feasible for this method.
Measuring surface roughness together with contact angle makes it possible to separate the influence of surface chemistry from surface roughness on wetting and adhesion behaviour. This is especially important when working with different types of surface modifications where both surface chemistry and surface topography are altered.
Until now, contact angle and surface roughness have only been measured individually by using an optical tensiometer and a separate roughness measurement instrument. The Attension Theta Optical Tensiometer with 3D Topography Module, enables automated measurement of the surface roughness on the same sample location as the contact angle measurement by using automated XYZ sample movement. With the included software OneAttension, surface roughness and roughness corrected contact angles are calculated automatically.
OneAttension software update available

Update v2.5 is now available for OneAttension software. The update contains several improvements such as enhancement to dynamic contact angle analysis with Theta optical tensiometers and several usability updates.

New Analytical Tool For Enhanced Oil Recovery

Biolin Scientific today announces the launch of the Attension High Pressure Chamber that enables surface analysis at experimental conditions mimicking oil reservoirs.
The unique features of the chamber enable operation at temperatures of 200°C and pressures of 400 bar and precise measurements of contact angle, interfacial tension and wettability. Additionally, the chamber will support analysis of analytes including asphaltenes, surfactants and supercritical CO2 to support the Oil and Gas industry’s efforts towards more efficient oil recovery. The chamber is an advanced add-on to the versatile Attension Theta Tensiometer.

Wettability of the surface is important in many different industrial process where adhesion plays a role. These include for example printing, painting and bonding where different kind of surface treatments are used to improve adhesion. Contact angle is a simple measurement to determine the successfulness of the surface treatment and it is thus often used in quality control. This webinar will go through basic concepts like contact angle and wettability. Some of the industrial standards are reviewed to show how contact angle measurements can be used in quality control. Finally it is demonstrated how OneAttension software can be utilized for contact angle measurements of large sample batches.

Biolin Scientific launches new software that optimizes contact angle measurements for industrial quality control.
Biolin Scientific today launches a new software module, OneAttension QC, that enables batch mode analysis of industrial surfaces. The software will support quality control analysis in the coatings, automotive, medical device and paper industries.
The core of the module is a new measurement mode enabling optimized performance for quality control measurements. With a simple measurement procedure, the software will automatically provide the operator with an overview of the wettability of different samples and materials.
This data will prove valuable in quality control by helping to detect defects in the production early in the process. OneAttension QC data can be easily interpreted, exported, plotted, or reported as a quality control report of the samples.

Biolin Scientific Returns from PetroPhase 2014

The 15th annual International Conference on Petroleum Phase Behavior and Fouling just finished up in Houston, TX.
PetroPhase 2014 is an annual meeting dedicated to the study of the chemistry, properties and behavior of petroleum components, such as asphaltenes, and their effect on producing, fouling, processing and refining.
Biolin Scientific attended the meeting to showcase the Q-Sense line of Quartz Crystal Microbalances and the QCM-D technology as well as the Attension line of Contact Angle Meters and Tensiometers. Additionally, Biolin presented a poster titled, “A Novel High Pressure and Temperature Chamber for Interfacial Tension and Wettability Studies”.
“Overall the meeting was successful”, Senior Application Scientist Matthew Dixon commented “We made a number of good contacts with industrial scientists studying adsorption, fouling processes and surface phenomena within the Oil and Gas industry and we’ll certainly be back next year”.
