Understanding Biocompatibility of Rough Surfaces

[ Recorded Webinar ]

Various types of artificial materials are being utilized as implants in all fields of medicine. The surface properties of the implant determine its interactions with the surrounding host tissue. Physicochemical properties of the surface, like wettability and surface roughness, are of prime importance for the optimization of adhesion, spreading and proliferation of cells.

In this webinar we will show you how to measure the effects of surface roughness on biomaterial performance. Contact angle and surface free energy is monitored together with the surface roughness of a sample, using a combination measurement enabled by the Attension 3D Topography Module. Examples from cell-implant and bacteria-biomaterial surfaces will be described in detail.
