A simple and novel method was developed for generating large-scale aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Chemically solubilized CNTs that possess good surface spreading properties at the air/water interface were transferred on pre-treated substrates. Atomic force microscope and polarized Raman spectra observation demonstrate that the tubes are oriented in the direction of the dipping direction. The physical origin of the in-plane CNT alignment could be attributed to the compress process and the hydrodynamic features in the vertical dipping process.
