In the present study, we have developed a new type of nanocomposite Ni-Co coating including mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) by electrodeposition for the corrosion protection of steel fasteners. The effects of the nanoparticles content in the bath on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of NiCo-MSNs nanocomposite coatings with and without silicone oil impregnation have been investigated comprehensively. It is found a significant improvement in corrosion resistance of the Ni-Co coating after adding 4 g/L of MSNs into the plating bath. The optimized Ni-Co-MSNs composite coating has MSNs both incorporated in the NiCo alloy matrix and dispersed on the coating surface. This nanocomposite coating infused with silicone oil decreases the surface wettability, friction coefficient, electrochemical activity at the scratch due to the dispersed mesoporous nanoparticles as oil reservoirs, showing a remarkable enhancement in corrosion resistance and lubricating performance of the composite coating system.
