The application of a Ga-liquid metal ion beam (Ga-LMIB) for surface modification is reported. Ga-LMIB treatment on the glass surface resulted in the implantation of Ga ions and the formation of sub-micrometer mounds. The glass surface hydrophobicity was also found to be enhanced as a result of the Ga-LMIB treatment; additionally, a photocatalytic activity that promoted organic dye decomposition was observed. Ga-LMIB application can be considered to be a new surface modification strategy for the construction of locally hydrophobic and photocatalytic surfaces.
